You can certainly make a living doing graphic design. One thing you really need is a good eye for design! If your work is sloppy or looks too basic, you won't get hired as much as someone who tightens up the images and looks professional. I used to do some freelance work but haven't really done it in years. There is a lot of competition and someone who is willing to make less money sometimes gets the job. But you get what you pay for and businesses soon learn that.
